Spotlight on Design - Contemporary Dream Home

We are going to add a new and exciting series to our blogs called "Spotlight on Design" that will feature a fantastic project completed by one of our extraordinary designers! This monthly feature will take the reader through the intricate thought process behind the design, the process itself and the fantastic end results!

This month's spotlight will be on a truly amazing project for a contemporary home by our talented designer, Erika Barczak, described in her own words. Please enjoy!

“This custom designed and handcrafted entertainment center not only conceals the TV and all electronic equipment but is a unique anchor to the space.  The black cabinet doors are accented with silver metal stripes. A 3-dimensional stainless steel mosaic fills the immediate area around the linear gas fireplace. Blending traditional and contemporary furniture creates a cozy area for watching TV or hosting a party.

While all of the selections and furnishings were kept to black, white, or gray, pops of color were introduced with large-scale pieces of art by African artist, Pharaoh. The linear lines of the entertainment center in the living room are accentuated by the striped marble counter top. A custom designed light fixture sparkles as the light shines through gray, black, and clear Swarovski crystals. A large island connecting the kitchen and living area serve as a gathering space forgoing a traditional dining area.

The powder bathroom is a study in textures blending smooth and rough metals, linen-like porcelains, bold ceramic glazes and smooth wallcovering.  The main wall tile shimmers like a washed linen while the bronze-glazed metallic mosaic tile runs around the room.  The smooth wallcovering gives the walls a soft appearance of fabric deeply contrasted with the bend metal framed vanity mirror.

The master bathroom was completely transformed when the over-sized corner tub was removed and replaced with a sleek free-standing bathtub dividing the room into ‘his’ and ‘hers’ sides. A smooth black porcelain tile runs up every wall to the painted black crown molding while a bold stripe of a marble mosaic runs down the center of the tub.  Heated floors, marble counter tops, and a delicate crystal chandelier elevate this beautiful space to a serene bathing experience.

An outdoor bathroom for pool party guests is striking and warm Ipe wood clads the interior walls.  Hubbardton Forge Sconces illuminate the space while a custom built pedestal vanity adds a sleek modern twist to the space.

A fun spin on a black and white bathroom; this space uses all of the classic elements in a fresh and updated way.  The black and white beveled subway tile split the elevation of the tub/shower.  A leathered piece of black granite tops the custom white cabinetry as the black and white curved marble mosaic polka-dots the floor. Across from the vanity, a large custom built-in cabinet provides adequate storage as well as a cute bench seat.

This sizzling sitting room doubles as a spare bedroom with a pull-out couch nestled against the silver and black houndstooth wall. Red and gray accents flow from the bedroom to the connected bathroom. Funky cabinet hardware plays off of the unique silver, gray, and white mosaic backsplash while the chrome faucet and light fixture pop against the deep red walls.

A sleek black leather and chrome headboard rest against a shimmering geometric silver and charcoal Candice Olsen wall covering. Smooth chrome accents such as the bedside lamps and chandelier contrast with the fluffy and cozy bedding.

Walls don’t have to be just flat planes and can add such character to a space beyond just a color.  This guest bedroom’s headboard wall was paneled in a contemporary square pattern and painted a glossy black that adds an amazingly elegant detail to the room. Crisp bright white bedding, accent furniture, and simple flowers give this space an energizing feel.

Why not take a space that is mostly used for mundane chores and make it as fun as possible?  A rich wall color, funky back splash tile, and accents from this couple’s Africa trips make this a much more inviting space. Adequate storage and lighting make this space functional as well as beautiful.” – Erika Barczak
