Making a Rug: A How To

To make a wool, hand tufted rug it is an easy process.

Step 1) Buy a sheep.

Step 2) Shear said sheep.

Step 3)….
JUST KIDDING!

But the rug making process is something truly spectacular that you probably never even thought about!

There are a vast many types of rugs out there, but we are going to focus on the truly wonderful skill that it takes to create a hand tufted, wool rug.

After the raw materials have been prepared, the actual construction of the rug can begin.

The craftsman will stretch the canvas with the rug’s pattern drawn out on a frame.

Then with a tufting gun the worker pulls the wool yarn through the small holes in the canvas. By using different colors of wool the craftsman creates the gorgeous patterns.

The design is complete the rug is washed and trimmed with a protective backing glued to the underside. This prevent the tufts from pulling out.

The end product is a beautiful, functional piece perfect for any home!

So when looking for a rug for your home, remember, there is a lot of work that goes into hand tufting, and it is well worth the price!
