How to Pick and Place a Rug - Part 1

Choosing a rug for your space can surprisingly be one of the hardest things you do. There are SO many options! You have to select the size, shape, pattern, color, and texture. That is a lot to think about!

Well, have no fear we are here to help. In this two part blog we will share a few tips and tricks to steer you in the right direction.

Size it up
– Choosing the correct size is often where people go wrong. Most shy away from the larger sizes because of cost and not wanting to overwhelm the room. This however leads to many choosing a rug that is just too small for their space.

A good trick to remember when choosing your rug size is make sure that you can fit at least the front feet of your furniture on the edge of the rug.

Or if the rug is going under your bed, make sure that the rug is under about three quarters of the bed with about 3ft showing around the bed. Additionally to accomplish this, your night stands should not be on the rug. This creates a nice, defined walking area around your bed.

Shape up! – One design mistake we see quite common is home owners choosing the wrong shape of rug for their space. While that circle rug is cute, under your rectangular dining table is just not a good idea.

A good rule of thumb to remember when selecting a rug’s shape is that the rug should mimic the shape of your furniture arrangement as well as define the space. A round breakfast table goes well with a round rug. A square or rectangular seating arrangement goes well with rectangular rug.

If you are putting a rug under your dining table, remember your dining chairs should still be on the rug when they are pulled out to a sitting position.

*As with every rule there are exceptions. A small two chair seating arrangement looks great with a round rug or even a large, asymmetrical, hide rug like the picture below!
